In today’s fast-changing search landscape, AI-generated answers are often the first thing users see.

The AI Keyword Performance report helps you assess your brand’s presence in these emerging results. You can track whether your website appears in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Universal results, as well as in ChatGPT and Perplexity, see how your brand is cited and compare your performance directly against competitors.

What this article covers

  • AI Visibility: see how visible your brand is in AI Overview (AIO) results. This metric shows how prominently your brand appears in AI-generated answers and how strong your overall presence is across those responses.

  • AI Brand Mentions Breakdown: explore how your brand is mentioned inside AI responses. The report shows whether your brand appears as a citation URL, inline URL, or plain text mention, along with the number of keywords and total mentions where your brand shows up.

How to view the AI Keyword Performance report in AWR

No separate setup is needed: if your project includes AI search engines (Google Universal, AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, or Perplexity), the AI Keyword Performance report is available for your existing ranking data.

For the keywords you’ve added to your project, AWR retrieves content directly from the selected search engine that includes AI-generated responses. 

Based on how your website performs within those results, it provides a clear overview of your brand’s presence, mentions, and visibility in AI answers.

Let’s explore the KPIs available in the Keyword Performance report one by one and see what each metric tells you about your brand’s visibility in AI search.

AI Visibility KPI

This KPI reveals your brand’s footprint in AI Overview results based on how often it is mentioned, the type of mention and the rank of its citations. The metric combines AI Brand Mentions (weighted by visibility strength) with citation rank to estimate how much of the potential AI visibility your brand captures across all keywords that trigger AI responses.

How to interpret the score for your brand:

  • Excellent (>60%): Consistently referenced in AI responses.

  • Good (35–60%): Solid presence in AI results

  • Fair (20–35%): Appears occasionally, with limited visibility

  • Poor (<20%): Rarely appears in AI-generated responses

Keywords with visibility below 1 indicate your domain is cited as a source, but appears outside the top six citations in the AI Overview.

How it helps you: It shows how visible your brand is in AI Overview results and how strongly it appears as a cited source, helping you quickly gauge your presence in AI responses and track improvements over time.

AI Brand Mentions Breakdown KPI

This KPI shows how your brand is referenced within AI-generated responses for the tracked keywords, split by mention type and how often it appears as an inline URL or as a plain text mention.

This KPI displays the total number of keywords where the selected website is mentioned, along with the change compared to the previous update.

It also provides a breakdown of mentions by type:

  • Inline URLs:  the brand is referenced through a clickable link within the AI response.

  • Plain text mentions: the brand name appears in the response without a link.

How it helps you: It shows how AI references your brand (whether as a clickable link or plain text) and how often it appears across tracked keywords, helping you monitor visibility and spot opportunities for more linked citations.

AI Traffic Potential KPI

This KPI offers an estimate of how much traffic your domain could gain if users discover and follow the sources cited in AI Overviews.

It estimates the potential visits a brand could receive from AI-generated responses, based on search demand and the brand’s weighted AI visibility strength in those results.

The metric is calculated using each keyword’s Google average monthly search volume together with the AI Visibility score, while deduplicating close keyword variants when they are detected among the tracked keywords.

How it helps you: It gives a quick estimate of the traffic your site could gain from AI-generated results, helping you understand the value of your visibility in AI Overviews and which keywords may bring the most potential visits.

AI Citations Rate KPI

This KPI displays the share of citation URLs that belong to your domain out of all citations generated by keywords that trigger AI responses. 

If the same URL is cited multiple times within a single AI snippet, each instance is counted.

It also highlights different citation types:

  • Visible citation URLs: Where your link appears directly in the AI response without needing to click “Show more”

  • Citation URLs: All instances where your domain is cited as a source in the AI response, including both visible citations and those revealed after expanding the citation list.

  • AI Presence%: The percentage of tracked keywords that trigger an AI response and contain citation URLs.

How it helps you: This KPI helps you see how often your website is used as a source in AI-generated answers compared to other cited domains, making it easier to understand your authority in AI results.

Brand Share of Voice KPI

This KPI highlights how much of the overall brand visibility in AI results belongs to your domain compared to tracked competitors.

The metric is based on all brand references found in AI responses, including mentions within the AI snippet and citation URLs.

The KPI displays your share of voice percentage, along with the change since the last update, so you can quickly see whether your presence in AI results is increasing or decreasing relative to competitors.

How it helps you: It shows how your visibility in AI results compares to competitors, helping you understand how much of the AI conversation your brand owns and how your presence changes over time.

Additional Keyword Performance Metrics

The Table view lets you explore AI visibility data at a more granular level, helping you see how your brand appears in AI responses for each tracked keyword.

For every keyword, you can also view the main KPIs from the dashboard (AI Visibility, AI Brand Mentions, Citations, Citation Rank, and AI Traffic Potential), giving you a clearer and more detailed view of your performance.

Additional metrics available at the keyword level include:

  • AIO Block SERP Position: shows where the AI Overview appears on the Google results page for that keyword, along with a preview of the citation URLs listed as AI sources. If the same URL appears multiple times, each occurrence is counted separately.

  • Cited Competitors: highlights the tracked competitor domains or brands that are also cited in the AI response for that keyword, making it easy to see which competitors share visibility in the same AI answer.
