The AWR Metrics Index

Every metric in the Advanced Web Ranking reports, in one place: definition, calculation, and where to find it.

Every number AWR reports, in one place: what it means, how it is worked out, which report shows it, and what it is good for. Written for the person reading a dashboard at 9am, not for the engineer who built it.

Rankings & position

Where a page sits in the results, and how that has moved. Everything else in AWR is built on top of these numbers, so it is worth knowing exactly which update date each one reads from.

Position

1 – search depth

Where your page came up for a keyword on the last update inside the report's date range. One keyword, one search engine, one day. The range runs to the project's search depth — 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 pages of results.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility ▸ Websites · Search Engines · Landing Pages · Groups · Competition ▸ Keyword Gap · Trends ▸ Dates Comparison

How it works

Read straight from the SERP AWR collected on that update. Each update is a fresh search performed by AWR, emulating human search behavior in a browser — not a stored snapshot or a research database — so positions exist only for the days an update ran.

Watch out

A blank cell means the keyword was not found within the tracked depth, not that it ranks just outside it.

Previous Position

1 – search depth

The same keyword's position at the update before the current one — the number you subtract from to see movement.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Competition ▸ Keyword Gap · Trends ▸ Dates Comparison

How it works

Read from the previous completed update inside the selected date range.

Best Position

1 – search depth

The best rank this keyword has ever reached since you started tracking it — your ceiling, useful when arguing that a page has ranked well before.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords (optional column)

How it works

The minimum position recorded across the keyword's whole history, not just the selected range.

Highest Rank

per landing page

1 – search depth

The best position a landing page reached on the selected date, across all the keywords that page ranks for.

Where to find it

Visibility ▸ Landing Pages

How it works

The minimum position across every keyword the URL ranked with on that update.

Avg. Position

per landing page · AWR data

decimal

How high a landing page typically ranks across the keywords it ranks for — the counterpart to Highest Rank, which keeps only the best one.

Where to find it

Visibility ▸ Landing Pages

How it works

The mean of the page's positions across every keyword it ranked with on the selected update.

Watch out

Not the same number as Avg. Position (GSC) in section 09 — that one is Google's own measurement across real searches; this one averages AWR's controlled updates. There is no keyword-level Avg. Position in Ranking ▸ Keywords — use Position Trends there instead.

Average Rank

per website · AWR data

decimal

The average position across your whole tracked set — a single number for “how deep in the results are we, on the whole”.

Where to find it

Visibility ▸ Websites · Landing Pages · Trends ▸ Keyword Changes · Competition ▸ Keyword Difficulty

How it works

All positions added together, divided by the number of keywords. A keyword that is not ranked counts as the search depth plus one — 101 on a top-100 project (Landing Pages divides by the number of SERP appearances instead).

Watch out

Because a not-ranked keyword counts as depth + 1, a few dropped keywords can sink the average even when everything that still ranks held its ground.

Avg. SEs Position

per keyword · across engines

decimal

One keyword's average position across the search engines you ticked in the comparison table — how consistently a keyword performs across Google, Bing, mobile and the rest.

Where to find it

Comparison ▸ Search Engines

How it works

The mean of the keyword's positions on the selected engines for the chosen update.

Position Trends

sparkline

The shape of a keyword's ranking over the selected period, so a one-off dip reads differently from a steady slide.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Position plotted at every completed update inside the date range.

Page

integer

Which page of results the ranking sits on. Page 2 and page 5 are both “not page 1”, but they are very different distances from traffic.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility reports · SERP ▸ Top Sites

How it works

Derived from position and the number of results per page for that engine.

Ranked / Not Ranked

keyword count

How many of your tracked keywords currently return a result for you, and how many return nothing at all.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Distribution

How it works

Counted on the last update in the date range, for the selected keyword group and search engine.

Ranking Distribution

keyword count per band

Your keywords sorted into position bands — 1st place, 2–5, 6–10, 11–20 and not ranked — so you can see whether a portfolio is top-heavy or stuck on page two.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Distribution

How it works

Keywords are bucketed by their position on the date range's end update.

Winners vs Losers

keyword count

How many keywords gained ground and how many lost it, broken out at every update in the period — the fastest read on whether a period went your way.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Distribution

How it works

Each update is compared with the one before it and keywords are classed as Improved, New, Declined or Lost.

Read next

Improved vs Declined

keyword count

The same win/loss read, but measured end to end: first update of the period against the last, ignoring what happened in between.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Distribution

How it works

Positions on the first and last completed updates in the range are compared once.

Average Change

positions · Low / Medium / High

How far a keyword moved on average over the period, banded so you can tell routine noise from something that needs looking at.

Where to find it

Trends ▸ Keyword Changes

How it works

Mean position change across the range. Low is 1–3 positions, Medium 4–10, High 11 or more.

Target URL

URL · match / no match

The page you decided should rank for a keyword, and whether that page is the one Google actually chose.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility ▸ Landing Pages (as Keywords in Target)

How it works

Set per keyword in the project; AWR compares it to the ranking URL on each update.

Cannibalization

flag

Flags keywords where more than one of your own pages is competing for the same query — usually a sign to consolidate or differentiate.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords (filter)

How it works

Raised when several URLs from your site rank for the same keyword, excluding the home page.

Branded / Non-branded

label

Whether a keyword contains one of your brand names. Splitting the two stops brand demand from flattering your non-brand SEO numbers.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Distribution · most report filters

How it works

Matched against the brand names and domain aliases held in project settings; detection is automatic and editable.

Close Variants

flag

Marks keywords that are near-duplicates of another tracked term — plurals, misspellings, reordered words — so you do not count the same demand twice.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords (filter and indicator)

How it works

Detected automatically by comparing keyword strings within the project.

Visibility & traffic potential

AWR’s own scores. These turn a table of positions into something you can put on one line of a client report — and, crucially, into an estimate of the traffic those positions are worth.

Visibility Score

points

A single weighted score for how present a site is in the results it is tracked for. Position 1 is worth far more than position 20, so the score rewards moving up, not just ranking.

Where to find it

Visibility ▸ Websites · Search Engines · Landing Pages · Groups · Ranking ▸ Keywords (KPI)

How it works

Each top-30 ranking earns points on a sliding scale — 30 points for position 1 down to 1 point for position 30, nothing below that — and the points are summed across every keyword and search engine in the project.

Watch out

It is a sum, not a percentage, so it grows when you add keywords. Compare it over time on a fixed keyword set, or use Visibility Percentage instead.

Visibility Percentage

0–100%

The share of the visibility you could theoretically hold that you actually hold — what you would score if every tracked keyword ranked first, against what you score today.

Where to find it

Visibility ▸ Websites · Search Engines · Landing Pages · Groups · Trends ▸ Keyword Changes · Competition ▸ Market Share

How it works

Visibility Score divided by the maximum possible score for the same keyword set, over the top 30 positions.

Watch out

Because the denominator moves with your keyword set, this is the safer number to trend when the project keeps growing.

Visibility Distribution

0–100%

How close to the top of the page your listings sit, measured in pixels rather than in ranking positions — the honest version of “we rank third” on a SERP stuffed with features.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility ▸ Websites · Search Engines

How it works

The listing's pixel distance from the top of the SERP, translated into a percentage; the nearer the top, the closer the value gets to 100%.

Click Share

0–100%

The slice of clicks a ranking position is likely to attract — AWR's CTR curve applied to where you actually rank.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility reports · Competition ▸ Market Share · SERP ▸ Top Sites

How it works

A weighted CTR score assigned to positions 1 to 20, built on AWR's Organic CTR Study data — a rolling six-month average that varies with keyword length. Depending on the account-level preference it is either an average across the top 20 or weighted by the SERP features present on that results page.

Watch out

Set the account preference once and leave it: switching between average and SERP-feature weighting changes history-wide numbers.

Total Click Share

0–100%

Click Share measured against every keyword in the project, not only the ones where you rank in the top 20 — a stricter read of how much of the available click demand you hold.

Where to find it

Visibility ▸ Websites · Ranking ▸ Keywords (KPI)

How it works

Same CTR curve, but the denominator is the full tracked keyword set.

Estimated Visits

visits / month

Roughly how many organic visits a month your current top-20 rankings could bring in — demand multiplied by the share of clicks your positions typically win.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility reports · Competition ▸ Market Share · Keyword Gap

How it works

For each top-20 keyword, monthly search volume × Click Share; the results are summed.

Watch out

A model, not a measurement. Compare it with Search Console clicks before quoting it to a client.

Local Estimated Visits

visits / month

The same estimate built on city- or region-level search volume, for projects tracking custom locations.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility reports

How it works

Local search volume × Click Share, for top-20 rankings in the targeted location.

Estimated Daily Traffic

visits / day

The monthly visit estimate expressed per day, for when you are watching a campaign week by week.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Daily share of search volume × Click Share for each top-20 keyword.

Traffic Cost

currency / month

What your organic traffic would cost to buy on Google Ads — the number that makes SEO budget conversations concrete.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Estimated Visits × cost-per-click, summed across the targeted keywords.

Local Traffic Cost

currency / month

The same PPC-equivalent value, calculated from local search volume and local CPC.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Local Estimated Visits × local CPC.

Search Demand

searches / month

The total monthly search volume behind the keywords you rank for — the size of the audience in play, before any assumption about clicks.

Where to find it

Visibility ▸ Websites · Groups · Ranking ▸ Keywords (KPI)

How it works

Search volumes of the ranking keywords, summed for the selected scope.

Branded vs Non-branded Traffic

visits / month split

How much of your estimated traffic comes from people already looking for you, versus people you had to earn.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Distribution

How it works

Estimated Visits calculated separately for branded and non-branded keyword sets.

Top Keyword

keyword + volume

The single keyword bringing a landing page the most estimated traffic on the selected date — a quick answer to “what is this page actually for”.

Where to find it

Visibility ▸ Landing Pages

How it works

The page's ranking keyword with the highest Estimated Visits on that update.

URL Intent

intent label

What a landing page is competing for, inferred from the keywords it ranks for rather than from the page itself.

Where to find it

Visibility ▸ Landing Pages

How it works

Derived from the search intent of the page's ranking keywords and the top-10 results behind them.

Search demand & keyword data

What people are actually typing, how often, what it costs to buy and what they seem to want. Sourced from Google Ads and from AWR’s own analysis of the top ten results.

Search Volume

searches / month + YoY %

How many times a keyword is searched in an average month in the country you track, with the year-on-year change beside it so seasonality is visible.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility ▸ Websites · Search Engines · Competition ▸ Keyword Gap

How it works

Reported by Google Ads Keyword Planner for the last month, for the search engine's country. The YoY figure compares that month with the same month a year earlier.

Local Searches

searches / month

Monthly demand for a keyword in the specific city or region you track, rather than country-wide.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility reports

How it works

Reported by Keyword Planner for the last 30 days for the project's custom Google location. Only available when custom locations are tracked.

Global Searches

searches / month

Worldwide demand for a keyword, added up across every regional database — useful when deciding whether a term is worth translating or expanding into.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility reports

How it works

The sum of the keyword's monthly volumes across all regional databases.

Quarterly Search Trends

trend %

Whether demand for a keyword is rising or falling, comparing the last three months with the three before them.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Percentage change between the two consecutive three-month windows.

CPC

currency

What advertisers pay on average for one click on this keyword — a proxy for how commercially valuable the term is.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Competition ▸ Keyword Difficulty

How it works

Average cost per ad click reported by Google Ads for the last 30 days, for the search engine's country.

Local CPC

currency

The same ad-click price for the specific location you track.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Average CPC reported by Keyword Planner for the last 30 days for the project's custom Google location.

Competition

0–1

How crowded the paid auction is for a keyword — a rough stand-in for commercial competitiveness, not for how hard it is to rank organically.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Visibility reports

How it works

Google Ads' advertiser-competition value for the selected country, on a 0 to 1 scale.

Watch out

Easy to confuse with Keyword Difficulty. This one counts bidders; Keyword Difficulty measures the organic top 10.

Search Intent

Informational · Navigational · Commercial · Transactional · Mixed

What someone searching this keyword is trying to do, read from the kind of pages Google chooses to rank rather than from the wording of the query.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Competition ▸ Keyword Gap · Keyword Difficulty · Visibility ▸ Landing Pages

How it works

Classified from the top 10 results and the SERP features present. When Google ranks several content types at once, the keyword is labelled Mixed Intent.

Keyword Status

tracked / new

In research views, whether a keyword is already in your project or is an opportunity you have not picked up yet.

Where to find it

Research ▸ Keyword Research · Keyword Suggestions

How it works

Matched against the project's keyword list.

SERP features & page real estate

Modern results pages are mostly not ten blue links. These metrics describe what else is on the page, how much of it you own, and how much vertical space you occupy.

SERP Features

feature count · opportunities vs achievements

The special result blocks Google added to a results page alongside the organic and paid listings — and which of them you hold.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · SERP ▸ Features · Top Sites · Visibility reports

How it works

Every feature detected on the SERPs AWR collected is counted as an opportunity; the ones where your site appears are counted as achievements. A green icon marks a feature you own.

Organic SERP Features

count

The subset of features you earn through the page itself — Reviews, FAQ, How-To, Q&A, image thumbnails — rather than through a separate Google surface.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords (KPI) · SERP ▸ Features

How it works

Counted as opportunities versus achievements for the selected keyword set and search engine.

Sponsored

count

Paid blocks on the results pages you track — ads at the top, at the bottom, and shopping carousels.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords (KPI) · SERP ▸ Features

How it works

Counted as opportunities versus achievements for the selected keyword set and search engine.

Products

count

Retail-specific blocks: product listings, popular products, related products, explore brands, buying guides.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords (KPI) · SERP ▸ Features

How it works

Counted as opportunities versus achievements for the selected keyword set and search engine.

SERP Features Changes

gained / lost

Features you won or lost between two updates — the quickest way to explain a traffic change that rankings alone do not account for.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · SERP ▸ Similarity

How it works

The two selected updates are compared per keyword. Green marks a feature you now hold; red marks one you held before and no longer do.

SERP Features Spread

count or % · two display modes

Which feature types appear across your keyword set and how much of each you hold — in Ranking Keywords mode by keyword count, in Traffic Share mode by the estimated traffic those features can generate.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Features

How it works

Computed on the last update in the date range. Traffic Share compares the Estimated Visits from your ranking keywords with the total Estimated Visits that feature could generate.

Achieved SERP Features Distribution

count per feature

A plain tally of the features your site currently owns, by type.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Features

How it works

Counted on the last update in the date range.

Won vs Lost Features

count + estimated visits

Features gained against features lost over the period, with the estimated traffic attached to each side.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Features

How it works

Compared across the updates inside the report's date range.

Pixel Position

pixels

How far down the page your listing actually starts, measured from the top of the results page in pixels. Position 3 on a feature-heavy SERP can sit below the fold.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · SERP ▸ Top Sites · Visibility reports

How it works

The number of pixels between the top of the SERP and your listing, measured on the rendered first results page — recorded regardless of the search depth set on the project.

Pixel Height

pixels

How much vertical space a result occupies — a large block earns attention that its ranking number does not convey.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Top Sites

How it works

The rendered height of the listing on the results page.

Above / Below the Fold, Out of Display

ATF · BTF · OOD

Whether a listing is visible without scrolling (ATF), needs a scroll (BTF), or sits beyond the first results page entirely (OOD).

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords (filter) · Visibility reports · Alerts

How it works

Banded from Pixel Position against the fold line — 1080 px on desktop, 800 px on mobile. Anything beyond the first results page is Out of Display.

Pixel Position Trend

trend

How a keyword's vertical placement moved across updates — in particular whether it crossed between above and below the fold.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · SERP ▸ Top Sites

How it works

Pixel Position plotted at each ranking update in the selected interval.

Brand Ownership

0–100%

How much of a results page your brand physically occupies — every listing you hold, measured as a share of the whole page's height.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Top Sites

How it works

Total pixel height of your listings divided by the total pixel height of the SERP, for the selected keyword.

Title tag & URL changes

change log

When Google rewrites the headline it shows for your page, or when the ranking URL itself changes — both common causes of a CTR drop with no ranking movement.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · SERP ▸ Top Sites

How it works

The title link and ranking URL are compared between consecutive updates.

Improved / Declined (Top Sites)

URL count

How many results on a tracked SERP moved up or down since the previous update — the page's churn, not just yours.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Top Sites

How it works

Every URL on the results page is compared with its position on the previous update.

SERP stability & change

Two reports answer the question “did the results page itself change, or did we?” — SERP Similarity compares two dates side by side, SERP Volatility tracks churn over time.

Similarity Score

0–100%

How alike two versions of the same results page are. A low score means the page you are optimising for has been substantially rebuilt between the two dates.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Similarity

How it works

A weighted average of four signals — Ranking URL pairs match, Position Stability, URL Intersection over Union and Search Intent Consistency — adjusted for the result depth you selected (Top 10, Top 20 or all).

Ranking URL Pairs Match

0–100%

How many URLs held exactly the same position on both dates — the strictest test of a stable page.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Similarity

How it works

URLs appearing in the same slot on both SERPs, divided by the total number of URLs on the current SERP.

Position Stability Score

0–100%

How much the results shuffled. Near 100% means everyone roughly kept their place; near 0% means the order was rewritten.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Similarity

How it works

Measures the size of position movement across the ranking URLs, rather than requiring an exact match.

URL Intersection over Union

0–100% · Jaccard index

How much the two pages overlap in terms of which URLs appear at all, ignoring their order.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Similarity

How it works

Shared URLs divided by the total number of distinct URLs across both SERPs. 0% is no overlap, 100% is an identical set.

Search Intent Consistency

0 · 25 · 75 · 100%

Whether Google still reads the query the same way. A drop here means the page you wrote may no longer match what the engine thinks the searcher wants.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Similarity

How it works

Primary and secondary intent are compared across the two dates: 100% both match, 75% secondary differs, 25% primary differs, 0% neither matches.

Top Changes Summary

% content replaced

The headline movements between two dates — biggest jumps and drops, new entries, URLs that dropped out — plus how much of the current page is made up of new domains.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Similarity

How it works

Position changes are ranked; the content-replaced score is the share of the current SERP occupied by domains that were not there before.

Volatility

0–10

How unsettled a keyword's results page is over time. High volatility means rankings there are worth less as a KPI and worth more as a warning sign.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Volatility · Top Sites

How it works

Scored from how much URL rankings shift from one day to the next across the selected period.

Volatility Trend

0–10 over time

The day-by-day shape of that churn, so you can line a spike up against a known Google update.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Volatility · Trends ▸ Keyword Changes

How it works

Daily volatility scores plotted across the range, with confirmed Google algorithm updates marked on the chart.

SERP URL Changes

URL counts

A summary of who moved on a results page over the period — improved, declined, stable, newly appeared or dropped out.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Volatility

How it works

Every URL seen on the SERP in the range is classified by how its position changed.

Domain URLs in Time

positions over time

Each competing domain's ranking behaviour for one keyword — the view that shows whether a rival is steadily climbing or just bouncing.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Volatility

How it works

Positions of each domain's URLs plotted across the selected time frame.

Search Intent Changes

intent over time

When the intent behind a keyword shifted — often the real reason a well-optimised page stopped ranking.

Where to find it

SERP ▸ Volatility

How it works

Intent classification plotted at each update for the selected keyword.

Google Algorithm Changes

annotation

Confirmed Google updates marked on your charts, so a drop can be attributed rather than guessed at.

Where to find it

Charts across Ranking, Visibility, Competition and SERP reports

How it works

Sourced from AWR's record of confirmed updates; available on Google search engines only.

Competitive share

The same visibility and traffic maths, applied to everyone ranking in your space. Market Share sizes the pie; Keyword Gap shows which slices are unclaimed.

Market Share

0–100%

Your share of the organic traffic the whole tracked keyword set can generate — the closest thing AWR has to “how big are we in this market”.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Market Share

How it works

Your Estimated Visits divided by the total Estimated Visits available across all top-20 organic rankings for the project's keywords.

Watch out

Because the denominator is everyone's estimated traffic, your share can fall while your own traffic rises.

Top Competitors

domain list

The domains that actually turn up in your results pages, ranked by market share — including ones you never thought to track.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Market Share

How it works

Extracted automatically from every URL found in the top 20 of the SERPs collected for your keywords. “My competitors” narrows this to the domains you added in project settings.

Keywords (top 20)

count

How many of the project's keywords a domain ranks for in the top 20 — breadth of coverage.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Market Share

How it works

Counted per domain on the selected update.

URLs (top 20)

count

How many distinct pages a domain uses to hold those rankings — depth of content behind the coverage.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Market Share

How it works

Counted per domain on the selected update.

Common Keywords

count

Keywords where both you and a given competitor rank in the top 20 — the ground you are contesting directly.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Market Share · Keyword Gap

How it works

Intersection of the two domains' top-20 keyword sets.

My Unique Keywords

count

Keywords you hold in the top 20 that this competitor does not — your defensible ground.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Market Share

How it works

Your top-20 set minus the competitor's.

Competitor Unique Keywords

count

Keywords the competitor holds and you do not — the most direct list of what to go after.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Market Share · Keyword Gap

How it works

The competitor's top-20 set minus yours.

Keyword Intersection

count + %

How much of your keyword footprint overlaps with each competitor — a high overlap means you are fighting the same war, a low one means you are in different niches.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Keyword Gap

How it works

Shared ranking keywords between your site and the selected competitors, shown as a matrix and as a proportion of each domain's set.

Gap categories

7 buckets

Every keyword sorted by who ranks for it: Common (everyone does), Exclusive (only you), Unexplored (at least one rival does, you do not), Absent (all rivals do, you do not), Outperforming (you beat them), Underperforming (they beat you), plus All keywords.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Keyword Gap

How it works

Assigned by comparing positions across the selected websites for the chosen update.

Watch out

Absent is the shortlist worth acting on first — every tracked competitor found something there that you did not.

Estimated Visits Distribution

visits / month

How the available organic traffic splits across the websites you are comparing.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Keyword Gap

How it works

Estimated Visits per competitor from top-20 ranking performance, using Click Share and Search Volume; only the last update in the interval is used.

Difficulty & authority

AWR scores how hard a keyword’s top ten actually is, split into the three things that make it hard: the domains, the exact pages, and the content itself.

Keyword Difficulty

0–100 · six bands

How hard it would be to break into the top ten for a keyword, as one score. Bands run Easy (0–14), Pretty easy (15–29), Doable (30–49), Tough one (50–69), Painful (70–84), Impossible (85–100).

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords · Competition ▸ Keyword Difficulty · SERP Difficulty · Keyword Gap

How it works

A weighted combination of the Domain, URL and Content scores calculated for the top 10 Google results, also factoring in the SERP features present and the makeup of the top 10.

Domain Difficulty

0–100

How strong the sites in the top ten are as a whole — if this is the high score, you are up against authority rather than against better pages.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Keyword Difficulty · SERP Difficulty

How it works

Scored from the backlink quality and authority of the domains behind the top 10 Google results.

URL Difficulty

0–100

How strong the exact ranking pages are — a big gap between this and Domain Difficulty means a strong site is ranking a weak page, which is an opening.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Keyword Difficulty · SERP Difficulty

How it works

Scored from the backlink quality and authority of the individual URLs in the top 10.

Content Score

0–100

How well written for the keyword the top ten actually is. When this is the highest of the three, the keyword can be won with better content rather than more links.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Keyword Difficulty · SERP Difficulty

How it works

Scored from how keyword-targeted and on-page optimised the top 10 results are.

Aggregated Keyword Difficulty

0–100

The average difficulty of everything your site is trying to rank for — a portfolio-level read on whether your ambitions match your authority.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Keyword Difficulty

How it works

Difficulty scores across the project's tracked keywords, aggregated for the main website.

Keywords Distribution (difficulty)

keyword count per band

Your keyword set sorted into the six difficulty bands — the shape that tells you whether there are quick wins left.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Keyword Difficulty

How it works

Keywords bucketed by their overall Difficulty score on the latest difficulty update.

Keywords in Top 10

count

How many keywords your main tracked site holds on page one.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ Keyword Difficulty

How it works

Counted on the latest difficulty update for the selected date range.

Trust Flow

0–100 · Majestic

How trustworthy a ranking page's backlink profile looks — quality of links rather than quantity.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ SERP Difficulty

How it works

Majestic's link-quality metric, reported for each of the top 10 URLs.

Citation Flow

0–100 · Majestic

How influential a ranking page looks based on how many links point at it — quantity rather than quality.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ SERP Difficulty

How it works

Majestic's link-quantity metric, reported for each of the top 10 URLs.

Referring Domains

count

How many distinct sites link to each page in the top ten — the practical answer to “how many links would we need”.

Where to find it

Competition ▸ SERP Difficulty

People Also Ask

The Questions report treats the PAA box as a surface you can own. These metrics track which questions your keywords surface, who answers them, and whether you hold the answer.

Total Questions

count

The number of different questions Google surfaced in People Also Ask boxes across the keywords you track, over the period.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Questions

How it works

Questions are normalised across the keywords that triggered them and counted once each, then grouped into automatic topics.

PAA Coverage

0–100%

How much of your keyword set brings up a PAA box at all. The more keywords that do, the more question-shaped content there is to go after.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Questions

How it works

Keywords with at least one PAA box in the range, divided by all tracked keywords.

Watch out

An organic-only search engine never records the PAA box, so low coverage can be a tracking setting rather than a SERP fact.

Answering Domains

count + ownership split

How many distinct sites Google cited as the answer across your questions, split by who they are: you, tracked competitors, other sites, or unattributed.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Questions

How it works

Answer URLs are attributed per question over the report's date range; questions with no parseable answer URL count as unattributed.

Gap (answer ownership)

Open · Contested · Lost · Owned · No opportunity

Where you stand on each question: Owned means you hold the answer now, Lost means you held it earlier in the range but not at the end, Contested means someone else holds it and you never did, Open means nobody holds it, No opportunity means the answer is unattributed.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Questions

How it works

Read at the end of the date range, with ownership checked across the whole range.

Question Topics

topic label

The theme a question was clustered into, so a hundred questions become a handful of content briefs.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Questions

How it works

Questions are grouped automatically by theme; clicking a topic filters the report.

Branded Questions

flag

Questions that mention a brand name — yours or a competitor's. Useful for spotting reputation questions Google is answering on your behalf.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Questions

How it works

Matched against the brand names and domain aliases of your tracked websites.

Question Status

New · Dropped

Whether Google started or stopped showing a question during the period.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Questions

Where to find it

Google Data ▸ Search Console · Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Each keyword's best position per search, averaged across all searches where the site was listed. Reported by Search Console.

Watch out

This will not match AWR's own Position: Google averages across every searcher and device, AWR records one controlled search.

Click Opportunities

0–100%

Google data

An estimate of the clicks you are leaving on the table because your CTR is below what your position usually earns. The highest percentages are your best chances of a quick traffic gain.

Where to find it

Google Data ▸ Search Console

How it works

Your actual CTR compared with the expected CTR for that position, expressed as the share of clicks missed.

Not Provided Sessions

sessions

Google data

An estimate of how many Analytics sessions came from each keyword — putting keyword names back onto traffic Google stopped reporting.

AI Search visibility

Measured on the prompts you track on AI engines — AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity — and on keywords that trigger an AI Overview on Google. The unit of success here is being named or cited, not being ranked.

AI Visibility

0–100%

AI Search

One score for how present your brand is inside AI answers — how often you appear, what kind of mention you get, and how high you sit among the cited sources.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance

How it works

A weighted score built from AI Brand Mentions (weighted by mention type) and Citation Rank, expressed as your share of the exposure available across all prompts that trigger an AI response.

AI Brand Mentions

count · by type

AI Search

How often your brand is referenced inside the AI answer itself — either as a plain text mention or as an inline link.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance · Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Every reference in the generated answer snippet is matched to your brand names and domains, then split by mention type.

Citations

count

AI Search

How often your site is listed as a source for the AI answer — the sourcing layer rather than the text of the answer.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance · Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Cited source URLs are extracted from each AI response and matched to your domains.

Citation Rank

position

AI Search

Where you sit in the list of sources an AI answer cites — being cited tenth is not being cited first.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance · Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Your position within the answer's citation group. A star marks citations visible without expanding “Show more”.

AI Citations Rate

0–100%

AI Search

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance

How it works

Your cited URLs divided by all citations across those prompts. A URL cited more than once in the same answer is counted once.

AI Presence %

0–100%

AI Search

The share of your tracked prompts that produce an AI answer at all — the size of the AI surface available to you.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance

How it works

Prompts returning an AI response with citation URLs, divided by all tracked prompts.

Brand Share of Voice

0–100%

AI Search

Your share of all brand references across AI answers, measured against the competitors you track.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance

How it works

All references to your brand — mentions in the snippet plus citation URLs — as a proportion of references to every tracked brand.

AI Traffic Potential

visits / month

AI Search

An estimate of the visits AI answers could send you, pairing search demand with how strongly you show up in those answers.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance

How it works

The prompt's Google average monthly search volume × AI Visibility, with close variants de-duplicated.

AI vs Organic Overlap

0–100% · six statuses

AI Search

Whether the pages Google cites in AI Overviews are the same ones ranking organically. Each keyword gets one of six statuses: Both, Diff. URL, Organic only, Citation only, Neither, or No AIO.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords

How it works

Keywords where your URL both ranks in the organic top 10 and is cited in the AI Overview, divided by keywords where an AI Overview with at least one citation exists. In Ranking ▸ Keywords it replaced the Achieved Organic Rankings KPI card; the bar breaks every keyword down by overlap status.

Watch out

A low overlap is not automatically bad — it often means AI answers are pulling from a different, non-ranking page you should strengthen.

SERPs with AI Results

count

AI Search

How many of your keywords return an AI answer — an AI Overview on Google, or a generated response on an AI engine.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords (KPI)

How it works

Counted across the tracked keyword set for the selected engine.

AI Rankings Rate

0–100%

AI Search

Of the keywords that trigger an AI result, the share where your domain appears inside it — cited or mentioned.

Where to find it

Ranking ▸ Keywords (KPI)

How it works

Keywords where you appear in the AI result, divided by all keywords triggering one.

AI URLs

count

AI Search

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance

How it works

All URLs the answer points to — inline links and citation URLs — each counted once per unique URL.

AIO Block SERP Position

position

AI Search

Where the AI Overview block itself sits on the Google results page — at the very top it absorbs most of the attention; further down it matters less.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance

How it works

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Keyword Performance

How it works

Citation domains matched against the project's competitor list.

Brand Intelligence

A different question from AI Search: not “did we show up for this prompt”, but “what does the model already associate with our brand”. Topics are retrieved from the AI engine, not supplied by you.

Brand Visibility

0–100%

AI Search

How prominently a brand appears across the topics an AI engine associates with your space.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Brand Intelligence ▸ Brands

How it works

Each of the brand's top-10 ranks is weighted — first place 100%, second 90%, down to tenth at 10% — and the weighted values are averaged across the updates in the date range.

Average Rank (Brand Intelligence)

per brand

decimal

AI Search

Where a brand typically lands when the model lists brands for your topics.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Brand Intelligence ▸ Brands

How it works

Averaged across the selected AI engine, topic or topic set, and date range. A brand absent from a response counts as rank 11, so it still weighs on the average.

Market Share (Brand Intelligence)

0–100%

AI Search

A brand's share of all brand occurrences the model produced for your topics — mind share as the AI engine sees it.

Where to find it

AI Search ▸ Brand Intelligence ▸ Brands

Notes

Definitions describe AWR as of September 2026. Scores marked as estimates — Click Share, Estimated Visits, Traffic Cost, AI Traffic Potential — model likely outcomes from ranking position and search demand; they are planning inputs, not measured traffic. For measured traffic, use the Google Search Console and Analytics metrics in section 09.
