Track AI Overviews Like a Pro with AWR’s New Google AIO Search Engine
The new Google Search + AIO search engine offers improved tracking of AI Overview results across Desktop and Mobile SERPs.
Google’s AI Overviews keep transforming the search landscape, taking over prime real estate on the SERPs and shifting how users interact with results. As this feature rolls out to more countries, it’s clear that tracking the presence of AI Overviews results is no longer optional.
To help you stay on top of these changes, we’re introducing Google Search + AIO, a brand new search engine type in AWR, specifically designed to track AI Overview results more accurately.
What is the Google Search + AIO search engine?
The Google Search + AIO search engine is built to offer enhanced support for tracking AI Overviews in Google’s search results. Unlike the standard Google Universal engine, which may occasionally face cases where source URLs are missing or incomplete, this version uses a dedicated scraping mechanism that enables more consistent retrieval and accurate reporting of these results.

Just like the Universal search engine type, it captures all types of web search results (excluding Ads) from both Desktop and Mobile SERPs. And, as with Universal, any clickable URL is treated as a competitor and counted when computing the ranking position.

Google Search + AIO search engine availability
The Google Search + AIO search engine is currently available for both Desktop and Mobile in the following markets: the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Japan, and Spain.
This search engine is included in all AWR plans and is also accessible to trial users.
How to Track Rankings for the Google AIO search engine
To start tracking Google Search + AIO, select the project to which you want to add this search engine from the Projects drop-down list.
You can add this search engine by either opening the Search engines drop-down from most UI reports (e.g. Ranking > Keywords) .

or from the Project Settings > Search engines section.

In the search engine wizard, select one of the supported countries as the target location, and choose Google Search + AIO under Search features.

After adding this search engine to your project, AWR will begin collecting data, which will be available starting with the next scheduled update or after triggering a new on-demand data refresh.
How many units are required for tracking the Google AIO search engine?
Since the Google Search + AIO search engine relies on a more advanced query mechanism to capture this data accurately, it uses twice the number of resources compared to standard engines.
This is because, unlike other SERP elements, AI Overviews load dynamically and require an additional query (so two queries per keyword) to be reported accurately.
