One of the biggest challenges that marketers face is creating content that stands out. With the rising popularity of content marketing, creating content that is engaging is necessary to stand out from the crowd and get noticed.
So how does a content creator stand out from the thousands of other content creators out there? Here are 5 tips.
1. Share your experiences and successes
One of the best ways to create interesting content is to simply share your experiences and successes. People love stories and case studies because they are personal and everyone’s experience is unique.
Case studies are particularly popular in “how to” niches, like digital marketing. They showcase real results and inspire other people to take action. Lots of people are writing about marketing, but when you actually become successful in marketing and achieve a result, people notice you.
For example, which of the following sounds more compelling?
5 Tips to Get More Freelancing Projects
How I Landed $10,000 in Freelancing Projects in One Month
The second article sounds more interesting because the content comes from someone that actually achieved a result.
As another example, in the recipe niche, creating a unique recipe and sharing it can make you stand out. For example, these Christmas tree brownies got shared over 70,000 times, mostly on Pinterest.
People love being entertained, even in niches like blogging and digital marketing. In fact, the entertainment industry is expected to pull in $2 trillion in 2017. Our need to be entertained is tied to our innate psychology.
One of the first online marketing blogs I remember subscribing to is Smart Passive Income by Pat Flynn. One of the things that keeps me coming back to his site is the variety of unique guests on his podcast.
Some that come to mind include his interviews with…
- A couple of guys that make a living selling Magic the Gathering cards
- John Lee Dumas about how he made a full time living from podcasting
- Someone that makes a living by selling art online
I spent my time listening to these podcasts because I found them intriguing.
Neville Medhora from Kopywriting Kourse is a blogger I admire for his entertaining and educational blog articles. In this post, for example, he talks about an experiment he did using an app to show that smiling in a photo increased people’s favorable rating of him.
Making your content fun and entertaining is a great way to differentiate it from others, particularly in “how to” and problem solving niches.
3. Write about Breaking News or New Trends
A lot of content marketing and blogging experts suggest focusing on creating evergreen content, but writing about recent events and short term trends is a great way to create engaging content for your readers. In fact, some websites focus exclusively on this type of content.
Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal are examples of sites that focus on sharing the latest SEO news. These blogs are popular for online marketing professionals wanting to keep up with the latest SEO trends and changes.
One reason that many blogs don’t write about news is because they are more focused on evergreen content. However, writing about recent news and trends is a great way to creating engaging content and keep your audience informed.
4. Use Video
Video is another great way to make your content stand out. Many content creators aren’t doing video because they feel like it will be harder or more work.
However, video allows you to create a more personal connection with your followers. They can see that you are a real person and engage with your message in a different way.
While some people may prefer written content, some will prefer to watch a video instead.
Marie Forleo has done extremely well by embedding YouTube videos into her blog articles. In fact, she probably gets a lot of visitors directly from YouTube as she’s gained 376k followers on her YouTube channel:
5. Invest in Your Design
Quality design is another great way to stand out from most bloggers. Most writers focus mostly on their writing, but good design can convey professionalism and quality.
Here is an example of a nice looking resource list from E-marketing Hacks:
Notice that the article is well organized into sections so that it is easier to read. The good news is that once you create a template for this type of post, you can re-use it again and again.
A lot of bloggers will skip this step because they aren’t graphic designers and don’t want to hire one. But simple designs are not difficult or costly to do and I was easily able to recreate the number image using Canva in about a minute using the circle tool.
To Sum It Up…
Creating great content doesn’t have to be hard, although it does often requires putting more time and effort into your articles. However, the results and extra attention are well worth it in the long run.
