Managing Keywords

In the Keywords tab of the Project dialog box you can add, remove, modify, import export and generate keywords.

  • To Add keywords, first enter them in the edit box, select a color from the drop-down list then press the [Add] button.

  • To Remove keywords, first select a keyword from the list, then press the [Remove] button.

  • To Modify keywords, double click on a keyword or select a keyword from the list, then press the [Modify] button.

[Warning]Warning

If you modify the name of a keyword, the keyword is actually removed and a new keyword with the updated name is added. This will remove all data from the project pertaining to the former keyword.

Double click on a keyword to change its text, color, or assign a different priority to it. The priority can be any number that is meaningful to you. For example, you can enter the number of results returned while searching for a keyword on a search engine. Alternatively, you can import this number from Google Suggest or Wordtracker, which give you an estimate of how many times that keyword was searched in a certain period of time.

[Note]Note

The keyword suggestions returned by Wordtracker are limited. If you wish to have a more detailed analysis you can get a paid service from them. For more information, visit their website: http://www.wordtracker.com/.

If you have a registered Wordtracker account, you can enter your Wordtracker key in the [Customize...] section.

You can also sort your keywords by 3 criteria: the original order of the entries, alphabetical order and by priority.

Furthermore, you can choose colors for your keywords, that will be available in the reports as well. You can change the original order by moving keywords up, down, send them to the top of the list or to the bottom of the list.

  • Google Suggestions.

When you wish to add a new keyword to your project, Advanced Web Ranking displays a list of suggestions. The suggestions appear right underneath the edit box as you type and they are provided by Google Suggest. See the following website for more information:

    http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en

You can navigate this list using the Up and Down arrows from your keyboard. If you don't want this list to show while you're typing a new keyword just press ESC and the list will disappear. It will show again only after you start typing another keyword.

  • Use Project Keywords.

When your project contains a large number of keywords, by enabling this option you can easily check if a certain keyword is in your list, in order to modify it or add related topics. The local suggestions appear right underneath the Keywords edit box as you type and you can navigate this list by using the Up and Down arrows from your keyboard.

The Import and Export buttons are used to import/export keywords. You can import keywords from a text file, from a web page, from Google Suggest, from Overture Suggest or from Wordtracker Suggest.

  • To Import keywords, press the [Import] button, then select the location where you want to import keywords from:

    • Import from file.

This feature allows you to import keywords from a text file. The format of the text file is one keyword per line. Just choose the name of the file that contains the keywords you wish to import.

If the chosen file contains special characters, Advanced Web Ranking will allow you to import them as such, with the help of the "Choose File Encoding" feature. Simply select the right encoding of the source file and the keywords will be correctly imported.

    • Import from URL.

This feature allows you to import the keywords contained in the META tag of a web page. The retrieved keywords will be added to a temporary list where you can edit them before adding them to your project. You can also specify another URL, and the new keywords will be added to the list.

    • Import keywords from Website.

This feature allows you to import the keywords contained in the meta title tag (page title), meta keywords tag or from both meta tags. You are able to set the page depth and the page limit.

Once you enter the website from where the keywords to be imported, select a search depth, the page size limit, from which meta tag top get keywords from and press the [Import] button. The retrieved keywords will be added to a temporary list where you can edit them before adding them to your project.

The "Get keywords from" drop down list allows you to select from where to import the keywords. You can choose to import them from page title, meta keywords tag or both.

      [Note]Note

The higher the page depth is, the more time Advanced Web Ranking will take to import the keywords.

    • Import from Google Suggest.

This feature allows you to import keywords from Google Suggest. Just type a word and press the [Generate] button (or the Enter key). You can edit the list of Google suggestions before adding them to your project. Then press the [Add all to project] button and the import is complete.

    • Import from Wordtraker Suggest.

This feature allows you to import keywords from Wordtracker Suggest. The import works just like the Google Suggest import.

  • To Export keywords, press the [Export] button, then select the file where you want to export keywords to.

Keyword Builder

To generate keywords, press the [Generate] button and write relevant words for your search. The Keyword Builder will generate a list of all possible combinations among the words you have added.

The Keywords Builder allows you to sort the results by either alphabetical order from the "Keywords" column, or by the number of words from the "Words" column in the Keyword Builder dialog.

Furthermore, the Keyword Builder allows you to select a group of words that have a desired order and consider them as a whole. All the combinations that are then generated will maintain that particular order of words. In order to achieve this, simply write the chosen words between quotation marks and press [Generate].

Customize this list by removing the combinations you find unnecessary, and press the [Add All to Project] button. All the remaining keywords will then be added to your project.

Deactivate Keywords

If you select more than one keyword, the Modify button will change into Deactivate, helping you deactivate more than one keyword at a time. To go back to Modify, just select a single keyword.

Duplicate (identical) keywords are not allowed, so they will be ignored.

You can temporarily deactivate keywords from a project. The data for the inactive keywords is not removed, but rather hidden from the reports. Also, when updating the project, the inactive keywords are skipped from the update. Reactivating a keyword simply makes it visible and updatable again.

In order to deactivate a keyword, go to the "Keywords" tab of the "Project Settings" dialog box, select the keyword, press the [Modify] button and set the status to "Inactive"

To see all your inactive keywords, go to the "Keywords" tab of the "Project Settings" dialog box, and press the [Show Inactive] button.

In order to reactivate keywords, select the keyword and press [Activate].

In order to permanently remove an inactive keyword, select it then press [Remove].

Keywords Translate

The Keywords Translate feature allows you to translate the keywords added to your project into any available language, using Google Translate.

When you select the [Translate] option, a new window will open from where you can select the keywords to be translated.

First, you need to select the keywords language and the language you want to be translated into. You can select all the keywords to translate by using the [Select] button or selecting each keyword's check box.

When all the settings are done, use the [Translate] button for Advanced Web Ranking to start gather translation for your selected keywords.

Keywords Spelling

The Keywords Spelling feature helps you check if the keywords from your projects are correctly spelled. Keywords Spelling uses the Google "Did you mean..." feature of google.com, google.fr, google.de, google.co.uk

When you select the [Spelling] option, a new window will open from where you can check the spelling of your keywords.

First, select the source that Advanced Web Ranking will use to spell check the keywords of your project and then select the keywords you want to check.

[Note]Note

When all the settings are done, use the [Check Spelling] button for Advanced Web Ranking to start gather the right spelling for your selected keywords.

Keyword Priority Source

Keyword Priority Source allows you to set the priority of your keywords manually, import it from Google or from Wordtracker.

User defined.  Allows you to manually set the priority of your keywords, "0" being the highest value.

Google.  This option imports the priority from Google Suggest.

Wordtracker.  This option imports priority from Wordtracker (an Wordtracker API is needed).

Keyword categories manager

The Keyword categories manager allows you to better organize the keywords from your projects by assigning them to specific categories.

Each category can be simple or complex. A simple category lets you to simply assign the keywords you want to be included in your category. The complex category lets you define rules to filter keywords you want to be in your category. Using the complex category, you can also use that category for multiple projects.

The Keyword categories manager is available in the [Keywords] tab in [Project Settings] and it's placed just next to the [Select category] button.

When you access the Keywords categories manager for the first time, you will be asked to choose what category you want to create. Once you have at least one category created, you will see the Keywords categories manager.

From the Keyword categories manager you can create a new category, edit, delete, duplicate or rename existing categories.
